 2nd Service
« Thread Started on Apr 19, 2009, 10:38pm »

First Sunday with 2 services. First service (traditional) we had 63. Second service we had 83. Several attended both. Think they were trying them out to see which one they like better.

It's been my experience that when you create a second service (or 3rd, etc.), you also create the 1st & 2nd christian church. Once they figure out which one they like better they will likely skip church before attending the "other" service if they can't make it to "their" own church service.

That is very true. the mistake I made when I last tried it was we weren't big enough to justify it. We split to accomodate music styles but it did not satisfy anyone. The good thing that came out of it was they realized they liked being with each other more than what kind of music we sang (although we still get complaints every now & then about that)

After you average well over 100 it is easier because in a sense you are already two or three different churches because most people will not or can not know that many different people. That probably why most churches in America average less than 100 - they like the close knit fellowship of knowing everybody.

What worked for us when we went to 2 services we kept both identical. Our Sr guy was adamant that we do that and it has turned out to be a good thing. The only problem we have is that first service hasn't grown, we have had 100 - 120 consistently from the start, second service has replaced those who moved to first and more. We are going to change our service times in June back 30 minutes and add children's worship to the first service hoping that will bring more to 1st service so we will have room to continue to grow in 2nd service. Second service seems to be our growth service, most visitors come to 2nd.

Most folks don't want to get up on a Sunday morning any earlier than they must, or are used to.

We're still doing pretty well. Had 62 in the 1st service and 95 in the second this past Sunday. We are going to do a mass mailing soon to promote both services.

That's tough because people naturally want to come to the service that is growing (& therefore exciting). If the two services are identical than the reason must be the time. Maybe instead of forcing people to go at a time they obviously don't want to (and parents with young children have a hard enough time getting ready for a later service) why not think about the times? Maybe instead of a later service have what is now the second service be the time the first service starts & add another service after it eliminating the early service altogether?

Well Sunday was our new time day - it went quite well - 1st service went from 115 to 235 and second service went from 250+ to 135. It's going to be an interesting summer to see how this all pans out. We also added a full slate of childrens programs to 1st service which we didn't offer before. Perhaps we should have kept the time the same and just added the childrens programs. We'll see how the summer shapes up.
