I've read it. Interesting, to say the least. My frustration with it is that Viola offers absolutely NO suggestions for fixing the problems he claims.
But, it is an interesting read, if you can make it through it. Kinda dry and over 2,000 footnotes.

Loved it. So much for those who think the Restoration Movement has restored THE New Testament Church. Not even close.
A great reality check for the Hillsboro crowd.

Personally I think Pagan Christianity's premise is to House churches ...problem is there are several holes in his premise.

I really liked it. I'd say I'm with Viola on about 80% (just a rough estimate). I was disappointed in his follow up book however. I guess we can tell how much folks liked it by how quickly they resign their paid ministry positions!

For what it's worth here's a scholary response to Witherington:

I read this, too. I thought it was a good book. Viola's premise is definitely that house churches are the answer. Even if you don't agree with his conclusions on solutions (he does offer them over a series of books, of which this is just one part), this book's presentation of how we got to where we are is worth the read, imho.

And you didn't even have to 'cuss' the bones.
Thanks for the input, James. Ever run across Kurt and Beth Swanson? If so, say hello from Louisiana.

Haven't in quite some time, but if I do, I'll pass it on.
